The Black River State Forest offers many recreational opportunities, including camping, hunting, hiking, skiing and ATV riding. Whatever the season, the Black River Area has what you are looking for. The Department of Natural Resources also manages this property to meet a host of other objectives, including maintenance of wildlife habitat, native biological diversity, soil and water quality, aesthetics as well as timber production.

The Black River State Forest offers three campgrounds: 1. East Fork on the east fork of the Black River near Hatfield, 2. Pigeon Creek located near Millston, 3. Castle Mound located near Black River Falls. Castle Mound has electric sites, but all three campgrounds allow you to experience nature in the true sense. Pigeon Creek has a sand beach on Pigeon Creek Flowage. Our area also offers you several fine community campgrounds located in Merrillan and Hixton. Gile Memorial Park is located on Oakwood Lake in Merrillan with twenty electric sites as well as a scenic waterfall which is a favorite for highway travelers.

The Black River State Forest is located along the edge of the glaciated area that once covered Wisconsin. In the unglaciated driftless area, many unique land forms can be seen. Sandstone hills and towering bluffs can be found throughout the forest. There are few places in the Midwest that feature such a diversity of scenery. All trails are clearly defined. Please stay on designated trails and routes.

Black River State Forest Trails Open: May 15 -- October15 & December15 -- March 15

The Black River Area provides 25 miles of single track trail. The Black River State Forest has 24 miles of designated mountain bike trails. Trailheads can be found at Castle Mound and Pigeon Creek Campgrounds.

The Black River State Forest provides 20 miles of horse trails through rustic pine and oak forest. The trailhead, near the East Fork Campground, is located in a twelve-site campgound developed specifically for horse riders. Before riding please call 715-284-4103 to confirm that the trails are open.
The 18 hole Skyline Golf Course is a golfer's paradise that is laid out over acres of undulating and wooded hills. You will be fascinated by the scenic beauty and design of the back 9 which carves through a beautiful oak and pine forest. Skyline Gof Course is located at 612 N. 11th Street in Black River Falls, WI.
